Stansted Mountfitchet Castle

Stansted Mountfitchet castle

Mountfitchet castle is a must visit for all who are visiting the Essex area. A complete open air museum has been reconstructed of a traditional Motte and Bailey castle, allowing visitors to travel back in time to 1066 Norman England.

Mountfitchet castle is unique in that it is the only reconstruction build on the original site anywhere in the world. Visitors are welcome to walk the castle grounds, explore the castle and wander in and out of the many historically accurate houses. Mountfitchet castle also hosts itself to a wide array of wild animals which are free to wonder the grounds. These include, chickens, ducks, birds, goats, wild deer and many more, with some friendly enough to pat.

The City of London

London City

With the capital being only a short 50 minute direct train ride into Liverpool Street from Stansted it makes sense to choose Stansted to base yourself for any exploration of this busy city. You can take a day trip in to London and see all the sites and know you can come back to the tranquility of the countryside and relax, leaving the hustle and bustle behind. 

London is one of the most diverse cities in the world offering something for everyone, whether wishing to visit the natural history museum, Madame Tussauds, Trafalgar Square or shopping down Oxford Street there is something for everyone in London.

The Local Area

Colchester ZooBasing yourself outside of London also gives you the opportunity to explore more of the United Kingdom. Essex has such a vibrant history with the historical town of Colchester not far away.  Colchester was once the Roman Capital of the United Kingdom and hosts both Colchester Zoo one of Europe’s finest zoos and Colchester Castle where you can find out all about the Normandy era.

Also just a short drive away is the Imperial War Museum: Duxford in Cambridgeshire. The Imperial War Museum is a unique venue that encourages the understanding of the history of war and war time experiences. The IWM is regarded as one of the essential sights to see while in London.  Air shows and more are many of the events, with the largest collections of aircraft ever seen all under the one roof on display.
